Description: Just a video about my up-and-down-and-up relationship with my body.
I banter because...I know how easy it is to believe that your body is a piece of junk. We live in a world where the web has transformed the way we view ourselves, from the pervasive online advertising that propagates idealized portraits of models, to the social platforms that link quantified units of approval - 'likes', 'shares', 'reblogs', 'retweets', 'views' - with worth. Consequently, there exists today an overwhelming pressure to conform to unrealistic standards of beauty, and the sense of inadequacy that results when these standards cannot be met. Subscribing to this sort of thinking can lead to serious mental illnesses. The root of the problem is that we often embrace the beliefs we receive from others blindly, without taking the time to unpack the nuances which exist within concepts such as beauty, confidence, and selfhood. Given time and support, together we can change the cultural conversation about our bodies. I speak as a teenager and as a survivor of many things. Contributing to Body Banter has been a way for me to process my own experiences, and a way to connect with those struggling.
